Concrete on a Small Riverside Footprint
Rio is a small community on the north side of the St. Lucie River, directly across from Stuart, and concrete contractors working in Rio fit their projects to tight lots and nearby water. The census-designated place covers about 0.9 square miles, and more than half of that is water; land is only about 0.4 square miles. The 2020 census counted 980 residents.
An 1890s river town
Rio was settled in 1893 and platted as Rio St. Lucie. Its first post office opened on March 24, 1893, as Rio San Lucie and was renamed Rio on December 1, 1897. It closed in 1902, when mail went through Goslingville on the peninsula just north of today's Roosevelt Bridge, reopened in 1904 and closed for good on October 15, 1927, when it was merged into the Jensen post office. Locals say the name "Rye-oh." Rio is bordered by Jensen Beach to the north and east and part of Stuart to the northwest.
A settled, shrinking-then-steady community
Rio counted 1,205 people in 1980, 1,028 in 2000, 965 in 2010 and 980 in 2020. In 2000 there were 622 housing units and a median age of 48. With almost no room to build new, nearly all the concrete work here is on existing homes: replacing an original driveway, widening a short apron, adding a patio or fixing a walk that has lifted.
Small lots change the plan
With so little land, many Rio properties have compact yards and short driveways. That affects how we work:
- Access: a concrete truck may not reach the back of the lot, so we plan for a pump or another delivery method when needed.
- Layout: every square foot counts, so we design patios and walkways to make the most of the space.
- Neighbors: forms, deliveries and cleanup are planned to keep shared spaces clear.
We look at all of this during the estimate so there are no surprises on pour day.
Water on the doorstep
Rio's listed elevation is about 7 feet, with the river along its southern side. Slabs need firm, compacted bases and deliberate slope so rain runs away from the house. Near brackish water, a dense mix, good cover over reinforcement and sealing help resist salt over the years. In 2000, 34.5 percent of households were one person and the average household held 2.08 people, so many owners want low-upkeep surfaces: a sealed patio that rinses clean and a walk without trip edges.
What we build here
Driveways. Replacing cracked or settled driveways, and widening where the lot allows.
Patios. Compact patios and screened-porch slabs designed to fit the yard.
Stamped concrete. A decorative finish that makes a small space feel finished.
Repair. Lifted walkway panels, broken steps and damaged edges.
Slabs. Generator, AC and shed pads where space allows.
County permits and roadside drainage
Rio is unincorporated Martin County, so right-of-way driveway and culvert work is permitted through the County Building Department. Its checklist asks for site plan elevations referenced to NAVD 88, the size and inverts of the neighbors' culverts, and a design that does not block existing roadside drainage. On a lot this close to the river, keeping the swale working is part of the job. We plan truck access and the permit together. Call (772) 280-4969 to schedule a free estimate.

Rio Questions
Can you pour concrete if a truck cannot reach my Rio backyard?
Yes. We plan for a concrete pump or another delivery method when the truck cannot get close, and include that in the estimate.
How do you fit a patio on a small lot?
We measure carefully, plan around doors, plantings and drainage, and design the slab shape to use the space well.
Can you fix a single lifted walkway panel?
Yes. We remove the lifted panel, fix the base and pour a new one level with the rest.
Is Rio part of Stuart?
No. Rio is an unincorporated community in Martin County across the river from Stuart, so driveway and culvert work in the right-of-way is permitted through the County rather than the city.
