Riverside Concrete on the North Fork

North River Shores sits on the tidal North Fork of the St. Lucie River in northeastern Martin County, and concrete contractors working in North River Shores plan around water on one side and established homes on the other. The census-designated place covers about 1.9 square miles, of which roughly a third is water. Stuart lies to its east, with US 1 along that edge, and St. Lucie County to its west.

A community that was built out early

Census counts show North River Shores already had 2,867 people in 1980 and 3,250 in 1990. The number dipped to 3,079 by 2010 and rose to 3,459 in 2020. Housing units went from 1,701 in 2000 to 2,038 in 2020. So many homes here have concrete that is decades old, alongside some newer construction.

Tidal water and low ground

The listed elevation is about 7 feet. Near a tidal river, two concerns come first. The ground can stay damp, so the base under a slab must be compacted and built to drain. And brackish water carries salt, which can work into concrete over many years. We use a dense mix, give the steel enough cover and recommend a sealer, and we slope every slab away from the house.

Patios and decks facing the river

For many owners, the backyard view of the North Fork is the reason they live here. That makes patios and pool decks the most requested work. We can:

  • Extend a small rear slab toward the water
  • Build a new pool deck or enlarge an existing one
  • Add stamped or colored finishes that suit a waterfront yard
  • Pour a path from the house to a dock or seawall area

We plan slope carefully so rain does not run back toward the house.

Older driveways

With close to 2,900 people here by 1980, many driveways are decades old, and concrete of that age often shows corner cracks, settled panels and broken edges. Where most of the slab is sound, we repair or replace sections. Where problems are widespread, we replace the driveway and can widen it at the same time for boat trailers or extra parking.

Smaller households, simpler upkeep

The 2020 census median age was 55.4, a third of residents were 65 or older, and 38.6 percent of the 1,685 households were one person. Owners often ask for concrete that asks little of them: a sealed patio that sheds leaves and rinses clean, a walk wide enough to wheel bins to the street, generator and A/C pads, and repairs to cracked walks, broken steps and lifted panels.

Martin County permits

North River Shores is unincorporated, so right-of-way driveway and culvert work is permitted by Martin County. The Building Department's checklist requires a culvert of at least 15 inches or matching the neighbors', shows the inverts of the pipes upstream and downstream, and forbids blocking existing roadside drainage. On a tidal lot, where water already has little room to go, those rules protect your yard as much as the road. Call (772) 280-4969 for a free estimate.

North River Shores Questions

Can you extend my North River Shores patio toward the river?

Yes. We dowel the extension into the existing slab, set the slope so water drains away from the house, and match or upgrade the finish.

Does brackish river water hurt concrete?

It can over many years, because of the salt. A dense mix, enough cover over the steel, careful curing and regular sealing help a slab resist it.

My driveway is from the 1980s. Should I replace it?

If panels have sunk or cracks are spread across it, replacement usually makes sense. If it is mostly sound, targeted repairs may be enough. We look and give you both options.

What culvert size does Martin County require under a driveway?

The County Building Department's driveway checklist calls for at least 15 inches, or the size of the neighboring driveway culverts if those are larger. We check the neighbors' pipes during the estimate.
