Concrete for a Boating Town
Port Salerno is a boating community, and that shapes what homeowners ask concrete contractors to build there. The St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon form its northern edge, the Manatee Pocket, a small natural bay off the river, lies to the northwest, Great Pocket bounds it to the east and US 1 runs along the southwest side. Stuart is about 5 miles to the northwest. Port Salerno is known for its fishing tournaments based at the yacht port, and many households keep a boat, a trailer or both.
Built in the 1920s, renamed in 1960
Settlement began in the 1920s with fishermen living along the Manatee Pocket, and the place was named Salerno because an early visitor thought it resembled the Italian city. It grew after World War II and became Port Salerno in 1960 to set it apart from its namesake. The 2020 census counted 10,401 residents, up 3.1 percent from 10,091 in 2010, and 5,432 housing units on about 3.6 square miles of land. Growth here is slow and steady, so a large share of concrete work is replacement and repair rather than new construction.
Pads for boats and trailers
A boat on a trailer puts a lot of weight on a small footprint, especially at the tongue jack and the trailer wheels. Parking that on a thin driveway or on bare ground leads to cracks and ruts. A dedicated pad solves that: 1. We excavate and compact a firm base. 2. We set the slab thicker than a standard walkway or patio, with reinforcement. 3. We slope it so rinse water and rain run off, not toward the house. 4. We cut control joints so cracking stays in straight lines.
The same approach works for RV pads, golf cart parking and pads beside the garage for a second vehicle.
Salt and the waterfront
Near salt water, concrete has an extra enemy. Chlorides can work into a slab over the years and reach the steel inside, which rusts and pushes off pieces of the surface. We use a dense, well-finished mix with enough cover over the reinforcement, and we recommend sealing. Rinsing salt off a slab after washing a boat helps too.
Repairs we see in older concrete
In a community with many homes built decades ago, common requests include:
- Cracked and settled driveway panels
- Broken steps and stoops at the front door
- Walkways lifted by tree roots
- Patios that slope toward the house instead of away
- Spalled surfaces where salt and rust have done their work
We look at each problem and explain whether a repair will last. When a slab is cracked in many places or slopes the wrong way, we recommend replacing it.
After the 2024 tornadoes
On October 9, 2024, Hurricane Milton spawned two tornadoes that hit Port Salerno within two hours, rated EF1 and EF2. Wind alone seldom breaks a slab, but falling trees, roots pulled up with them and loaded cleanup trucks do. If a driveway, pad or walkway was cracked or lifted that day and only patched since, it is worth a look: often only the broken panels need to come out, with the base rebuilt under them.
County permits for a driveway
Port Salerno is unincorporated Martin County, so driveway and culvert work in the right-of-way is permitted through the County Building Department. Its checklist asks for runoff controls on the site plan and a temporary construction driveway with a piped culvert while the work is under way, plus a culvert of at least 15 inches or the size of the neighbors' pipes. On a lot at about 10 feet of elevation near the Pocket, that drainage detail matters as much as the slab. Call (772) 280-4969 for a free estimate.

Port Salerno Questions
How thick should a boat trailer pad be in Port Salerno?
Thicker than a patio or walkway. We size it to the weight of the boat and trailer, add reinforcement and compact the base well. We explain the thickness in your written estimate.
Can salt air damage my concrete?
Over time, yes. Salt can reach the steel inside and cause rust and spalling. A dense, well-cured slab with proper cover over the steel and a good sealer resists it much better.
Can you fix my front steps instead of replacing them?
Sometimes. If the steps are solid and only chipped, we can repair the edges. If they have separated from the house or settled badly, replacement is usually needed.
