From Pineapple Fields to Lagoon Patios
Jensen Beach started as farmland, and today homeowners there hire concrete contractors to build the outdoor spaces that make lagoon living easy. John Laurence Jensen arrived in 1881 and set up a pineapple plantation. By 1895 the town was called the Pineapple Capital of the World, shipping more than a million boxes a year. A freeze that year, fires in 1908 and 1910 and the collapse of the pineapple trade by 1920 ended that era. The community now has 12,652 residents, according to the 2020 census, on about 7 square miles of land along the Indian River Lagoon.
Low ground and high ground
Jensen Beach is mostly flat and close to the water, with an elevation of about 7 feet. The exception is the Skyline Drive area, which reaches about 70 feet at one point. Those two settings call for different thinking.
Near the lagoon: water is the main concern. Slabs need a firm, compacted base and a slope that moves rain off quickly. Salt air reaches concrete here, so we pay attention to a dense mix, proper cover over reinforcement and sealing.
On the ridge: driveways may slope toward the street. A sloped driveway needs a finish with enough texture for traction in the rain, and the transitions at the garage and the street must be formed carefully so cars do not scrape.
What we build for Jensen Beach homes
With a median age of 55.2 in 2020, many households here care about safe, easy outdoor spaces. That shapes a lot of the work:
- Wider, flatter walkways from the driveway to the front door, with no trip edges
- Patio extensions under and beyond a screened lanai
- Pool decks with a finish that grips when wet
- Concrete repair for lifted walkway sections and cracked steps
- Stamped concrete entries that look finished without high upkeep
- Slabs for golf carts, kayaks, generators and sheds
Storms that came ashore here
Jensen Beach took two direct hits in 2004. Hurricane Frances made landfall on Hutchinson Island on September 5 with 105 mph winds, and Hurricane Jeanne followed on September 25 with 120 mph winds. Trees that came down and roots that lifted walkways are the kind of damage that can sit unrepaired for years. A sidewalk panel that rose two inches during a storm two decades ago is still a trip hazard today. We can cut out and replace the lifted sections and deal with the roots under them.
Older homes and historic streets
All Saints Episcopal Church, built in 1898, is the oldest church building in Jensen Beach and in Martin County, and the Capt. John Miller House on Indian River Drive dates from the late 1890s. Most of the housing is much newer, but the range of ages is wide. The 2020 census counted 7,089 housing units, 14 percent of them vacant at the time of the count. If you are away part of the year, we can schedule the work around your calendar and send photos as it goes.
Driveways at the County line
Jensen Beach is unincorporated, so a driveway or culvert in the right-of-way needs a Martin County permit through the Building Department. Its driveway checklist calls for a culvert of at least 15 inches, or one matching the neighbors' culverts if theirs are larger, and limits the change in grade to 10 percent for a single-family driveway on a local street, which matters on the Skyline Drive slopes. We fold those requirements into the written estimate. Call (772) 280-4969 to set up a visit.

Jensen Beach Questions
My Jensen Beach driveway is steep near Skyline Drive. What finish do you recommend?
On a sloped driveway we use a broom finish with a coarser texture so tires and shoes grip in the rain. We also shape the transitions at the garage and the street so cars do not scrape.
Can you fix walkway panels that lifted after the 2004 hurricanes?
Yes. We cut out the lifted sections, remove or cut the roots under them where it is safe to do so, rebuild the base and pour new panels level with the rest of the walk.
I am only in Jensen Beach for the winter. Can work happen while I am away?
Yes. We can plan the work around your schedule and send photos of the site before, during and after the pour.
