Concrete for an Inland Village

Indiantown is the inland village of Martin County, and concrete contractors working in Indiantown see more ground, more equipment and more working properties than on the coast. The village was incorporated on December 31, 2017, after special state legislation and a resident referendum. It lies about 22 miles southwest of Stuart and 12 miles east of Port Mayaca on Lake Okeechobee, with the St. Lucie Canal along its southern border.

Higher, drier ground

Indiantown's listed elevation is 36 feet, well above most of the coastal communities in the county. Only about 2 percent of its 14.4 square miles is water. That does not mean drainage can be ignored, but it does mean fewer of the very-low-ground problems we see near the lagoon. Sandy soils still need compaction before any slab goes down.

A history of stop and start

Indiantown began as a Seminole trading post, and settlers followed in the 1890s. In 1924 S. Davies Warfield brought the Seaboard Air Line Railroad through and planned a model city. The land boom faded after 1926 and the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane halted development. In 1952 the Indiantown Company built water and sewer systems, housing, docks on the St. Lucie River and a 6,000-foot airstrip. The Seminole Inn, on the National Register of Historic Places, is nearly all that remains of the 1920s boom.

Working properties need working slabs

The local economy leans heavily on seasonal agriculture, and the village is a transportation hub for several major roads. Payson Park, a thoroughbred training facility, is here too. Properties with trucks, trailers, tractors or horses need concrete built for load:

  • Equipment pads thick enough for tractors and machinery
  • Driveways that can take trucks and trailers without cracking
  • Barn and wash-rack slabs with texture for hooves and good drainage
  • Shop floors for maintenance and storage

We size thickness and reinforcement to the heaviest load the slab will see.

Homes and yards

The 2020 census counted 6,560 residents, 1,777 households and 1,965 housing units, with a homeowner vacancy rate of just 0.6 percent. The median age was 30.0, and 46.1 percent of households had children under 18, so driveways here carry family cars, work trucks and bikes. For homes, we pour and replace driveways, build patios and pool decks, add pads for generators and sheds, and repair cracked walkways. Stamped concrete is an option for owners who want a decorative patio or entry.

Rodeo town roots

In the 1950s and 1960s the Circle T Ranch and its Rodeo Bowl drew crowds; the 1963 rodeo brought about 15,000 visitors, at the time the largest tourist attraction in Florida. The village's ranch and horse history still shows in its properties, and the slabs that serve them, from tack rooms to wash racks, get the same planning for load and drainage as a driveway.

Village permits for the right-of-way

Since incorporation, Indiantown runs its own right-of-way permits through the village Building and Planning Division and Public Works. The village's permit packet says driveway connections must follow Public Works specifications, construction must start within 60 days of approval, the Engineering Department needs 48 hours' notice before work starts, and a Public Works installation inspection follows. Disturbed right-of-way has to be restored and sodded or seeded. We fit the pour into that sequence so the inspection is not a surprise. Call (772) 280-4969 for a free estimate.

Indiantown Questions

Can you pour a slab for tractors or farm equipment in Indiantown?

Yes. We size the thickness and reinforcement to the heaviest equipment, compact the base well and slope the slab so wash water and rain drain off.

What finish works for a barn or wash rack?

A coarse broom or grooved finish gives hooves and boots grip when wet. Drainage is just as important, so we plan slope toward a drain or away from the building.

Does the village handle permits now?

Indiantown became a village in 2017, so permitting may run through the village rather than the county. We check which office handles your project before scheduling.
